2017 – 2019

⇠ Academic background

Between 2017 and 2019, I attended the Intelligence Technologies and Digital Design Program at Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (TIDD PUC-SP), Brazil, where I had the opportunity to pursue my Master’s degree. The title of my dissertation was “Creative collaboration in teams mediated by digital platforms”, with a marking of 10.

I researched creative collaboration performed by remote teams. In this scenario, remote teams meant teams whose members were located in different geographical places and collaborating through digital channels and platforms.

The main theoretical framework applied was Jill Nemiro’s work regarding creativity in virtual teams. Nemiro has researched the topic for over twenty years and presents a structural model to analyse and evaluate creative interactions.

My field investigation consisted mainly of qualitative research, where I interviewed in-depth 13 people that at the moment were working for companies like IBM, ThoughtWorks, StackOverflow, and Ericsson, among others. The research methodology used was the Grounded Theory as described by Kathy Charmaz. Charmaz is the author of “Constructing Grounded Theory – A Practical Guide Through Qualitative Analysis”. Her book brings the foundations of Grounded Theory as developed by Barney G. Glaser and Anselm L. Strauss (1967). Also, it presents guidelines to put the methodology into practice.

As a learning experience, the research highlighted that a psychologically safe environment and trustful relationships are essential for creative teamwork, and human contact and relations are fundamental to building this scenario. Remote work brings new challenges as human contact and connections tend to be more restricted when mediated by digital channels. Also, having the possibility to put the Grounded Theory methods into practice was an invaluable learning opportunity for me.
